this is why we write letters to our future selves…

from “Old Lady Brag Box” 9.2.11

“… when it is so far beyond apparent that the situation needs to change that you are living daily in ridiculous refutal, I need you to know that saying goodbye is not the same as losing. Leaving is not the same as failing. Rather it is the largest success you can grant yourself and in the future it needs to happen far before the love fades and disrespect settles in. I need you to know that fixing an unhappy man now will absolutely not stop your father from walking out the door on you in the past. Nothing will stop that. It can’t be changed. And only you can decide to end the pattern of abandonment by choosing to provide yourself with your own stable, reliable, responsible love. You will experience this again, and again you will stave off decisive action through fear of rejection, and that’s okay, you are learning. I still love you.”

  1. Letters to the self are a fabulous way of getting to know yourself, giving yourself an opportunity to change, loving yourself through it all, and reflecting inward. I love writing letters to myself. I love that your letter ends with I still love you. Because self love is the only love with which to begin.

    • Thank you Lindsey-I have often looked back at letters to myself and old writing to re-learn old lessons. Sometimes you need to learn the same lessons over and over in new ways. And it all dwells in self-love, you’re right!
